The Tikoloshe

tikoloshe · tokoloshe · hili

The short, hairy, water-dwelling thing out of Xhosa and Zulu country. Not a legend — a pattern. The same bad shape in the dark, reported the same way for a century.

Frank opens a file on the Tikoloshe: keeps to reeds and pools, steals milk from the pen, and doesn't stay outside. The records agree more than they should — baboon face, one buttock, more animal than a man ought to be, and still too much like one. Whole classrooms emptied over it. What works against it is cheap and old: raise the bed on bricks. Don't sleep low to the floor.

The Chupacabra

el vampiro de Moca

A folklore complex created in real time: Puerto Rico, 1995, media panic, and instant regional mutation as it traveled.

Frank's case file on the Chupacabra: the Puerto Rican livestock panic, the upright spined witness reports from Canóvanas, and the later hairless canid sightings that inherited the same name. Two completely different creatures filed under one word — the shift in body plan is the story, not a problem to solve.
